On September 19, 2001, The Kittatinny Gobblers and the Highland Chapter co-hosted our First Annual JAKES Conservation Day. The festivities were held at the Appalachian Bowmen Hunter Education Center, Whittingham Wildlife Management Area. The event was held less than two weeks after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, but to keep up the values that we wished to project, we thought it best to have our event instead of cancelling it. Over 100 children ranging in age from 4 to 17 came and particpated in the day's activities.
Scheduled events included: Archery, BB guns, trap shooting, balloon shooting (shotgun), muzzloading shotgun, camouflage hide-n-seek, a bass fishing seminar, a turkey hunting seminar, firearm safety lecture, and making turkey calls. The New Jersey Hunter Education Division personnel were on hand to conduct the all the gun shooting events except for the black powder shotgun, which was run by the Highlands Chapter volunteers. Although not part of the NWTF, the Applachian Bowmen pitched in and conducted the archery events. The kids had a whole lotta fun shooting at their 'running deer' target.
The following are some pictures of the the days activities:
